Find Your Top 25 Passions – An Exercise

A fun and simple exercise to reveal your passions

A few years ago, I took a class on creative writing and self-discovery.  The literature about it said it could “help find who you are”.  I was skeptical, but I love these types of classes as they can improve or open viewpoints you may have never considered.

The instructor asked me to get a pen and piece of paper and write down the 25 things I am most passionate about today.

The deal was, you had to write quickly, without stopping, without editing, without much thought other than just what popped into your mind.  At first I struggled to get started, looking around the room to see if anyone else was too.  However, once I got a few items down on the page, the door flew open and the 25 seemed to fall out of my pen.

When I was finished, I re-copied the list (to legible handwriting) with one of my scrapbooking calligraphy pens.  When I stopped what I was doing and moved my eyes over my list, a well of emotion came from somewhere and I found tears had come to my eyes.  I loved that simple, quite powerful exercise that actually taught me something I didn’t know about myself.

This was my list:

25 Things I am most Passionate About

  1. My family
  2. My pets
  3. Blue skies after rain in Texas
  4. Walking in a beautiful forest
  5. Planting flowers and taking care of them
  6. The way the ocean moves
  7. The deep color of blue
  8. Wind through trees
  9. Fresh hot coffee on a cold day or really really cold beer on a hot one. J
  10. Quietness of early morning
  11. Stars away from the city
  12. Horses running
  13. Watching birds against the sky at dawn
  14. Laughing
  15. Travel
  16. Reading a book that makes me feel something or teaches me something
  17. Listening to music that breaks me out in goose bumps
  18. Honoring the memories of those who are no longer here on Earth
  19. Baby animals of all kinds
  20. Cooking my family a great meal
  21. Photographs
  22. Living green
  23. Being and remaining debt free
  24. Quiet understanding of the miracle of life
  25. Taking classes of all kinds

Which one on this list surprise me the most?  Watching birds against the sky at dawn.  It was an unconscious love of mine I’ve had since childhood.  Now I am conscious of it, I can live in each moment.

How can creating a list such as this help you today?

  • It can help you see the good in your day, even if you don’t feel it’s good.
  • It can show you what you love that you may have forgotten you loved.
  • It can show you that life is indeed such an amazing gift when you open yourself up to accept it the way it is.
